This is a Daruma doll(達磨, Daruma). It is imitation ornament of Bodhidharma Zazen.

Eyes are sold in blank. They pray for something. If it is achieved, it is customary to write the Daruma eyes.

Sermon



Kōbō-Daishi(弘法大師) says.
When a heart is seized with worldly desires such as the darkness, all the things to come across become the evil. However, if open eyes of the enlightenment, all the things to come across are precious.



This statue is called "Jikokuten(持国天)".
It is one of the guardian deity protecting the east of the Four Heavenly Kings.

Do you like a view from the hill?




West Japan in the Edo period(1603-1868), the small size of the clan, many of them narrow alluvial plain too.
Therefore, to increase the incomes of the clan, often paddy fields were made to the slope of mountain.
Tradition of Rice Terraces(棚田, Tanada) is succeeded to now.

Star Festival



七夕(Tanabata, July 7) is said to be a combination of Chinese tradition with beliefs peculiar to Japan.

It celebrates the meeting, just once a year, of two lovers, Hikoboshi (the star Altair, personified as a cowherd) and Orihime (Vega, as a weaving girl), who are separated by the Milky Way on the other days of the year.





In general, a strip of paper to write their wishes are carried out to decorate bamboo leaves.
